Wimbledon Park Earlies - vote with your feet!

We love our early mornings in the park, especially in the summer. However, over August we know many of you, like us, will be away. We therefore need your help.

We'd love to know your availability for our Wimbledon Park 6.15am sessions from the end of July to beginning of September.

We usually train on Mondays and Wednesdays, but we've also added some Friday mornings onto our schedule over the summer too.

When will you be here & which classes would you like to come to? Tell us on our very quick survey!

If you're not an early morning regular in Wimbledon Park, why not give it a go over the summer? We meet at 6.15am at the Revelstoke Road entrance. You can then choose to finish at either 7am or 7.15am. Why not make a pledge that you'll join us now by checking some dates in our survey!

If you select a class & then later find you can't make it, that's OK, just let us know as soon as possible.

Please make your selection by the end of Wednesday 19 July (it's really very quick to do). We'll then confirm the dates we're offering, based on popularity, by Sunday 23 July

Tell all of your friends! The more people who vote, the more classes we can offer.

100km on foot - Good luck to Heather on her race to the stones tomorrow!

I'm feeling a little nervous this afternoon, as tomorrow morning (15th July) I'll be on the start line of a 100K race (62 miles of running!). I start at 7.30am and my aim is to finish before the sun goes down.

I'm raising money for a fantastic local charity called Momentum. They do an amazing job of helping change the lives of children with cancer and life-limiting conditions in our local community.

If you'd like to find out more about my challenge and Momentum, pop over to my virgin money giving page (it would be lovely if you could donate some money while you're there too!).

Please also keep your fingers crossed for a lovely cool day on Saturday!

Important Class Update

Tennis fortnight is about to begin!

We do love all of the Championship buzz, but it also means that one of our lovely training grounds, Wimbledon Park, turns into a campsite!

We're determined not to cancel any of our classes, so here's the plan for the next 2 weeks.

Buggyfit postnatal classes will take place in Durnsford Park (see below). We'll be there at our regular times of 11.00am on Mondays & 11.00am on Thursdays. If you've got older children, bring them along as there is a fantastic little playground!

Our Monday and Wednesday 6.15am sessions will meet just outside of the Revelstoke Road Wimbledon Park gate. We'll then be putting you through your paces either in or around the park. Please don't bring lots of stuff with you, as we maybe moving around a bit. It should be lots of fun though!

Fit In The Park Saturday 9.00am - we will confirm the location this week for you.

Durnsford Park is a lovely green area just off Durnsford Road (put SW19 8EY into your sat nav). You'll find street parking (pay-at-machine) on Wellington, Lucien, Gordondale, Havana & Mount Roads. It's a bit further away from where all the action is, so there are no Wimbledon Tennis parking restrictions.

Obviously we do recommend leaving your car at home & giving your workout an extra boost by walking, running or cycling to our classes. However, if you're driving around Wimbledon during the tennis fortnight, it can get very busy, so it's wise to plan in extra travel time. Parking can also be challenging as there are restrictions in place.

All of our South Park Gardens classes will be running as normal & everyone is welcome to come along. Check out our timetable for full details of all our classes. Be warned though, we've got some great workouts planned & we may even include a tennis theme here & there. We know this is a busy time, but we'd love to see as many of you as possible training with us over the coming weeks. If you need to renew your pass, or buy a pay-as-you-go session, head over to our purchase page.

Have you plans for the long weekend?

If not, here's a little help for planning your next 3 days...

Saturday in Wimbledon will be a "mostly dry day with sunny spells developing, and just the odd light shower possible" (Met Office).

So join us tomorrow for Fit In The Park in the sunshine!

Sunday's outlook is "bright and breezy, but with a chance of rain later." So head out for a walk/jog/run in the morning and maybe plan a healthy casserole for the evening (best leave the BBQ in the shed).

It's then going to be "rather cloudy on Monday with some rain, clearing later with winds easing."

We're not running any classes on Monday, so maybe enjoy an easy morning and a bike ride for the afternoon (pack your waterproofs just in case).

We're then back up and running again for a "mostly dry Tuesday with sunny spells".

Check out our full Fit In The Park and Buggyfit timetable here, and then buy your class passes online here.

P.S. This weather report was from the Met Office website...so don't blame me if it rains all weekend!

Ruunn!

"If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don’t spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it."  Priscilla Welch

Did you watch the London Marathon & think, hmm that could be me next year? Do you run but need some help with technique? Have you been running for years, but never seem to get any faster? Are you a beginner who needs a bit of motivation to run more?

Then get in touch. We know the perfect person to help.

Our Trainer, Claire, ran a personal best a couple of weeks ago at the London Marathon. She did it in 2hrs 45 mins & was 6th non-elite woman across the finish line!

Claire's not only a formidable runner, she's an amazing Personal Trainer & Running Coach. She'll first observe & evaluate your running & then work with you to improve your efficiency & speed. Not only will this help you to become a better runner, it'll also reduce your chances of getting injured.

Don't be intimidated by her swiftness, Claire is brilliant at helping all levels of runners from beginners through to advanced.

Tempted? Get in touch to find out about our personal training or small group sessions with Claire. Or, we've still got a few places left on our Saturday morning Running BootCamp: Drills, Hills & Skills.

Well Done Claire & Dave Grima!

A huge congratulations to our incredibly fast trainer Claire & her husband Dave, who raced in the Amsterdam Marathon a couple of weeks ago.

Claire shot around the course in 2:49:18, & Dave slightly faster at 2:48:45. We're a bit miffed that this is the first time Claire has been beaten by her husband at this distance. But we're confident she'll leave him for dust next time!

Get in touch if you'd like some personal training sessions with Claire. Whether you want to beat your marathon PB, or run a 10k for the first time, Claire's your girl!

Keeping Your Cool

Cool Spots

Running your wrists under a cold tap when it’s hot feels lovely.  Did you know this is part of your body’s natural cooling system?

The blood vessels in your wrists are close to the surface of the skin. The theory is, by making this bit of you cold, you reduce the temperature of the blood passing through. This cooled blood then circulates around the rest of your body, giving you some relief from the heat.

All of your pulse points (places where you can feel your pulse) seem to work like this. The neck, inner elbows & backs of the knees are some of the easiest areas to chill. Throw cold water on or wrap a wet cloth around them during your workout & you’ll get some relief. You've also got pulse points in the tops of your feet & ankles, so after a hot workout plunge your throbbing tootsies into a bowl of icy water. Bliss!

Cooling your whole head feels great too. I love going out for a run with wet hair (quick cold shower before I go, looks a bit strange but it works!).

Cool Sweat

When we’re hot, more blood is directed towards the skin’s surface (that's why you go red). The body then produces sweat on the skin to cool the blood down.

It’s a great cooling system, but it does use up a lot of water. So when it’s hot outside, stay hydrated. Plan ahead, keep sipping water throughout the day & increase your consumption both during & after your workout.

There’s a quick scientific test you can do to see how hydrated you are. Go to the loo & check the colour of your urine. The lighter the colour the better. Think the colour of lemonade rather than Pimms!

Cool Kit

To allow this sweating process to work efficiently, avoid wearing clothes that trap sweat & heat against your body. Opt for lightweight, loose fitting clothes.

If you train a lot in the heat, invest in some technical kit that pulls the wetness away from the skin. It’s the evaporation process that keeps you cool. Look for words like Climacool (Adidas), Dri-Fit (Nike) or just a generic "moisture-wicking" fabric.

Cool Ego

When it gets hot, slow down and listen to your body.

Be aware of your current fitness levels. Generally, the fitter you are, the better your body can tolerate exercise in the heat.  If you're unfit or new to exercise, don’t push it too hard & take lots of breaks.
Whatever your fitness ability, on hotter days, don’t aim to beat previous scores, or get a PB. You have my permission to ease back!

Cool Training

Summer outdoor workouts are definitely worth sweating over.  Just make sure you train sensibly, stick to the shade & avoid the middle of the day.

So don’t hide indoors. Make the most of the lovely weather, it won’t be around for long!

It's Marathon Time Again

We wish all of our clients, friends & especially our HA fitness trainer, Claire Grima, a fantastic race on Sunday. We'll be cheering you on all the way & look forward to hearing your post-race stories next week.

Huge congratulations to our client, Mandy Brown, for running the Boston Marathon on Monday. It's really saddening that what should have been a day of triumph & festivities turned into something so horrific. Let's not allow it to change the way we enjoy & participate in big sporting events in the future.

Feeling inspired?

Running a marathon is an experience that's difficult to put into words. It's a mixture of passion, pleasure & pain. However there's something really inspiring about watching those runners pushing themselves to the limit to cross that finish line. Maybe it could be you next year?

If you're thinking about putting your name down for a race, doing a run for charity or simply want to improve your fitness levels, get in touch. We can motivate, advise & help you to achieve your goals, & have a bit of fun too!

The Morning After…Exactly What Did Happen To Your Legs?

So after a good workout, you go to bed feeling physically tired but great. The next morning, your alarm goes off, and your plan is to jump out of bed, all fired up for another session.  But oooow it hurts. You can hardly move, you plummet to the floor and crawl to the bathroom. After loosening up a little in the shower, you’re ready to attempt the stairs. Backwards is the only option. What exactly has happened?!!

DOMS: The Exercise Tax

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness  (DOMS) is the technical name for that achy, stiff and fatigued feeling you get in your muscles following an intense workout. The sensation can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain.

Typical symptoms include weakness, pain, tenderness, stiffness, and swelling of the muscles. These don’t all occur straight away though. Loss of strength usually happens within the first 48 hours, and it can take up to 5 days to fully recover. Pain and tenderness usually peaks after 1-3 days and will typically disappear within 7 days. Stiffness and swelling can peak after 3-4 days and this can take up to 10 days to return back to normal.

Don't worry. It's not as bad as it sounds or feels. Some people even relish and look forward to the DOMS sensation kicking in! Think of it as a natural consequence of you challenging your body to a new level. Sometimes referred to as the exercise tax, DOMS is often an unavoidable reward for seriously hard work.

When Pain Isn't DOMS

As we mentioned earlier, DOMS occurs hours after you've finished your workout. This is very different from an acute pain that arises abruptly during an activity. Pain that stays with you or gets worse as you exercise is also a strong indicator of a problem that's not DOMS. Additionally, pain around your joints (eg knees, hips, back, pelvis, elbows or ankles) could be a more serious issue that should be checked out.

What Causes DOMS?

You often hear people blaming DOMS on an excessive build up of lactic acid. However, this theory was debunked about 10 years ago when studies demonstrated that lactate levels in the blood rapidly returned to normal within an hour of exercise. As DOMS doesn’t usually hit you until around 24 hours after a training session, it can therefore be assumed that lactic acid is not the culprit.

Current theory suggests that DOMS is caused by microscopic damage to your muscle tissue. Your body then responds to this damage by triggering inflammation and swelling, which adds to your sensation of pain and discomfort.

The degree of tearing and inflammation depends on how long, how hard and what type of exercise you do. However, you’re more likely to suffer from DOMS if you:

  1. Start exercising after not having done it for a while.

  2. Do a type of exercise that your body isn’t used to (ie. a runner playing tennis for the first time).

  3. Increase the intensity or duration of your workout (ie. a runner doing a tough speed work session, or going for a much longer run than normal).

  4. Focus on exercises that involve eccentric movements, where muscles are lengthened as they resist a force (Eg, downhill running, walking down stairs, landing on the ground following a jump, the downward part of a press up etc)

Your Pain Is Not In Vain

The good news is that all of this pain and discomfort is not totally unproductive.  The underlying DOMS process is all about repair and regeneration. As a result, your muscles are becoming stronger and less likely to be damaged in future.

You're Not Getting DOMS, What’s Gone Wrong?

It’s been 3 days since you pushed your body through an intense workout, but you still don’t feel sore.  Where’s that post-exercise pain and tenderness that you’d almost grown to love? You can’t believe you didn’t work hard enough, so why don’t you feel achy like you did a few weeks ago?

Thankfully, a lack of soreness doesn't relate to a lack of progression, or that you’re not trying hard enough during your workouts. Your body is very quick to adapt to the demands of exercise, and with experience, it becomes much more efficient at dealing with muscle damage. Basically it has less of a shock to the system to deal with.

So don’t get addicted to the idea of post-exercise muscle soreness, it’s merely an indicator of tissue trauma. A red face and sweaty workout gear coupled with an inner glow and a smug feeling are the true indicators of a hard workout!

Just don't give up when it starts getting tough!
