What to Wear to Winter Workouts

My top tips (from 18 years of working outside!) on how to stay warm when you’re working out in this gloriously chilly weather…

BASE LAYER: The most important bit. If you want to stay warm, you need to stay dry. You want a material that will wick the sweat away from your body. My favourite base layers are all made from Merino wool. It’s soft, stretchy and keeps you snug and dry.

MID LAYER: This is the bit that keeps you warm. The thickness of your mid layers will depend on the temperature and your activity levels. If it’s really cold, you may want a couple of thin mid layers so that you can adjust your temperature as you warm up.

OUTER LAYER: To protect you from wind, rain and snow! Look for something that is both waterproof and breathable. Avoid bulky jackets (or save them to put on at the end of your workout). My favourite outer layers are all made from Gortex. It’s (fairly) breathable and water/wind resistant.

ADJUST YOUR LAYERS: It’s really important to regulate your body temperature. Take off your layers as soon as you start to feel warm. Make sure you don’t overheat. And as soon as you stop your workout, add them back on again, before you start to get chilly.
