The Benefits of Wild Walking!

A lovely stroll on a sandy beach recently got me thinking about how different it was to walk on sand compared to concrete footpaths.

Humans have been walking upright for millions of years, and most of this has been done on natural uneven surfaces, over rocks, through wild grasses and up and down hills.

It’s only in very recent times that we’ve walked on smooth, man-made surfaces like concrete, asphalt, flagstones and treadmills!

When we walk on these flat, predictable surfaces, we reduce the range of movement that we do, and our walking pattern becomes very one-directional.

In comparison, walking on uneven ground (like the beach, muddy paths, fields etc) creates a bigger change in our centre of gravity. We have to work harder to stay upright.  If the foot is unstable, it requires a much deeper engagement of muscles throughout the upper and lower body. We’re not just walking, we’re also leaning from side-to-side, tilting forward and twisting a little. This ultimately builds a stronger, more resilient body.

There are huge mental benefits too. The unstable ground helps us to connect more with our environment and nature.

On the beach, there were pebbles, shells, seaweed and puddles that kept me focused on where I was putting my feet. The sand was also unpredictable, with different levels of supportiveness underfoot. I needed to concentrate more and react quicker to my surroundings. As a result, my walking speed slowed down and I ultimately became much more mindful of everything around me.

When I was back on the dull, tarmac footpath, my steps became more rhythmic and repetitive. My mind became busy again, and I started to think of a hundred and one things - none of which included where I was putting my feet!

So, for countless mental and physical benefits, I’d highly recommend getting out into nature for some wild walking. It doesn’t have to be at the beach, investigate some muddy trails or even attempt some stepping stones across a river!

Ideally, you want to build it up slowly, especially if you suffer from any joint pain or balance issues. You’ll soon become stronger, more confident and able to enjoy the benefits of longer walks over challenging terrains.

Have you been wild walking recently? I’d love to hear your experiences.

Do you go to the gym to sit down?

During a consultation with a client recently, we wrote down a typical day for her. It looked a bit like this.

  • Sit down to eat breakfast

  • Sit on a bus

  • Sit at a desk

  • Sit down at the gym (on a stationary bike, rowing machine, seated leg press, seated chest press, seated lat pull down…)

  • Sit on the bus back home

  • Sit down for dinner and TV

My client didn’t actually realise how many hours she spent sat down, until we added it all up. So, we talked through some easy ways for her to become more active. Things like getting on and off the bus a couple of stops earlier. Standing up every 30 minutes, and walking over to talk to someone rather than messaging them. These small adjustments could all add up to make a big difference to her daily activity levels.

However, the part of my client’s day that got me really thinking, was when she was exercising. The majority of her time at the gym was spent sat down on exercise machines. Considering she spent most of her day sat down, this was one hour where she could actually be up on her feet and moving around.

Rather than the seated weight machines, I suggested using free weights (think dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, sandbags, barbells etc). These require greater muscle activation, especially from the core stabilisation muscles, and tend to use more natural, everyday movements.

For her cardio fitness, I encouraged her to head outside for a powerwalk or run. The uneven terrain will increase the number of muscles she is able to recruit. And she’s likely to get a mental health and energy boost from being out in the fresh air and in nature.

Finally, I suggested she could include some balance and agility workouts at home in the evening. This would not only get her moving around, but would challenge her co-ordination, strength and proprioception.

We’re now working together to put all of these ideas into a tailored, progressive plan. We’ll be exploring different ways of creatively working-out using body weight and free weights. And we’ll be meeting up to do all of this outside in the park!

So, I’m now curious, how many more people go to the gym to sit down?

HA fitness training - indoors or outside

HA fitness outdoor banner.jpg

The HA fitness banner continues to fly!

With the PM now urging everyone to work from home, we realise some people's schedules are about to change, yet again.

The good news is, HA fitness isn't changing (well for the time being anyway).

If you're working from home, our live online class timetable is designed to fit around your busy working day.

You can join us on Zoom for an energetic HIIT style class at 6.15am, 7am or 9am. Then take a break from your desk for a lunchtime Stretch and Restore or Cardio Pilates session. One evening a week we also have a Cardio Core class, which is not only a fab workout, but a great stress buster too!

If you'd prefer to be outside, we're got 4 Fit In The Park classes a week in South Park Gardens. We’re delighted to say that these sessions will continue to run as they are socially distanced and follow the COVID-19 secure guidelines. They’re also lots of fun too.

Drop us a line if you’d like to book a free trial or have any questions etc.

Remember to exercise.jpg

Last week was a happy week for many, as the kids finally shuffled their way back into school.

We know that a few of you also returned to that slightly strange place called "The Office" again.

Although all of these changes are seen as progress, it's also important to hold onto some of those positive routines which we all developed over the last 6 months. Like ensuring that you take time out for yourself to both exercise and rest.

We hope that our online and park timetable suits a changing world, where schedules are evolving. Here's what we've got planned for this week:

Update on our park classes

You've probably heard about the new legislation banning social gatherings of more than six people starting on Monday 14th September.

As far as we're aware, this will NOT restrict our Fit In The Park classes as

"The rule does not apply to schools and workplaces, or weddings, funerals and organised team sports" (BBC News).

If we get any updates on this, we'll let you know. In the meantime, bookings are open for the following sessions in South Park Gardens:

  • 6.15am Thursday

  • 7.45am Saturday

  • 9.00am Saturday

  • 9.30am Monday (babies and children welcome)

Use your class pass (£75 for 10 sessions) or drop-in for £10. Free trials for all newcomers!

We need everyone to book in advance (in accordance to the COVID-19 guidelines). You can do this either on messenger or email.

Everyone welcome, we have loads of space! Drop us a line if you'd like anymore info.

That feel good feeling from training outside again!

Socially distanced SPG2.jpg

Loved teaching our 7.45am and 9.00am sessions on Saturday in South Park Gardens. What a beautiful morning for exercising outdoors!

Everyone was happy to remain a safe 3 meters apart throughout the session. We were so socially distanced that you can’t quite see everyone in the photos. Can you spot a few of our clients underneath the shade of the tree?

Despite the distancing, we still successfully managed to chat, laugh and workout hard. Just like the old days!

We’re continuing to run our hybrid timetable of Zoom and outdoor fitness this week: Fit In The Park and Fit In The Home.

If you’d like to join us, just message or email me for details.

Back in the park!

1st day back in SPG - social distancing.jpg

And we’re back!! Our first Fit In The Park class at 6.15am this morning in South Park Gardens.

Well done to Antonio who was running this session, both in the park and on Zoom for our clients at home.

And well done to our amazing clients for joining us, following the social distancing rules and working out really, really hard. It was so lovely to see you all in real life!

Antonio is back tomorrow at 6.15am, this time in Wimbledon Park. Drop us a line if you’d like to join him. This session will also be taking place on Zoom.

Wow what a fantastic start to our outdoor sessions!

Training outdoors - please remember to bring your own mat

Bringing your own mat.jpg

We unfortunately won’t be able to bring mats to our outside classes for you to borrow. Mats, boxing gloves, TRXs etc are all on the banned equipment list - soft materials being difficult to clean to a high enough standard.

So please bring your own mat if you’re joining us in the park. You don’t need an expensive one, just something you can lie on. Amazon is probably the best place to look. Please drop us a line if you’re unsure.

Covid-19 - keeping our clients safe at HA fitness

Covid certificate - HW.jpg

At the beginning of this year, when I was looking at professional courses and skills development, this one certainly wasn't on my to-do list!

It's just one of the many things we've been working on recently, to help our clients feel safe and confident in joining us for some outdoor fitness classes.

Training in the Great Outdoors again

Outdoor fitness...coming soon.jpg

Yes that’s right! The news we’ve all been waiting for. With the latest easing of restrictions, we can now head back into the park providing we stick to the COVID-19 Secure guidelines.

We will be announcing our new Zoom and Park timetable shortly.

Please bear with us while we update our policies, waivers and booking system over the next few days. We need to do this to ensure we are compliant with current legislation and our insurance companies. We will be doing everything we can to keep everyone safe whilst ensuring you have a great workout too!

See you in the park soon!

Need a hand? HA fitness personal training sessions available

As a team, we've been running PT sessions on Zoom since the beginning of lock down. And we've received a lot of amazing feedback as a result. Some of our clients are even booking in extra sessions!

You may have heard that there's been a change in what we, as a profession, can offer. We're now allowed to train people on a one-to-one basis, provided that it's outside and social distancing guidelines are observed.

However, after speaking to many of our clients this week, they've all said that they'd prefer to keep their sessions online for now. Well that suits us too!

If you're interested in starting some Personal Training sessions with our team, either on Zoom or outside, do drop us a line. We'd love to have a chat and see how we can help. Be it one or two sessions to set you on the right track, or regular weekly workouts tailored to your goals.
