The Meaning Behind GBB 1933!

Have you ever been out on a walk or run and spotted something odd like this and thought, “What on earth does that mean?”

Well I’m that nerdy friend who gets home, falls straight down a Google rabbit hole, and tries to figure it out.

So here you go…

“GBB” stands for Guildford Borough Boundary.

These boundary stones were used to mark the edge of land controlled by the borough. They were used to define where the borough’s authority applied, especially for things like taxes and local by-laws.

The date “1933” carved into the stone is especially interesting. It marks when this boundary was officially set. That timing lines up with a period when Guildford borough expanded significantly, absorbing a number of surrounding rural areas into its administration.

It’s easy to walk past things like this without a second glance, but I see them as little time capsules, telling the story of how a place has changed over time.

Next time you’re out walking and spot something unusual carved into stone, it might be worth a closer look. You never know what bit of local history you’ll uncover!
